Amazon Product Image Requirements in 2026: Size, Background and Export Guide
Amazon product images have two jobs: pass marketplace review and persuade a shopper who may only see a small mobile thumbnail. The main image is the strictest. It should show the actual product clearly, normally against a pure white background, without promotional text, borders, badges or accessories that are not included. Category rules can be stricter, so always check the current image guidance inside Seller Central before publishing.
Image dimensions matter because Amazon's zoom experience needs enough source detail. A longest edge above 1,000 pixels is a practical minimum for zoom, while a clean 1,600–2,000 pixel square export gives most products room for sharp desktop and mobile viewing. Do not enlarge a small blurry source just to reach a number: upscaling increases pixel dimensions but cannot recreate missing product detail.
Build the main image before you compress it
Start with the largest clean original you have. Center the product, remove unnecessary empty space and make the product occupy most of the frame while leaving a small safety margin around the edges. If the photographed background is distracting, create a clean cutout first, then place it on a true white canvas in an editor. Keep the original file so category-specific changes do not require another photo shoot.
Use a square canvas when it suits the product because square images crop predictably in search results. Tall or wide products can still use a square canvas without distortion; add white space rather than stretching the item. Check the thumbnail at a small size. If the product becomes difficult to identify, adjust the crop before working on compression.
Choose JPG, PNG or WebP for the upload
JPG is usually the safest final format for ordinary product photography because it combines broad compatibility with a small file size. PNG is useful while editing transparency or crisp graphics, but a photographic PNG can be several times larger than the equivalent JPG. Convert a finished transparent PNG to JPG only after placing it on the required white background, because JPG cannot preserve transparency.
Export photographs at a high-quality JPG setting, inspect labels and fine edges at 100% zoom, then compress only as far as the image remains clean. Compression artifacts are easiest to see around text, jewelry, fabric patterns and reflective edges. If a listing portal is slow or rejects the file, resize the dimensions before applying more aggressive compression.
Use a repeatable listing-image checklist
Prepare the main image separately from secondary images. Secondary slots can explain scale, show alternate angles and demonstrate the product in use, subject to current category policy. Keep lighting and color consistent across the full set so shoppers do not wonder whether they are looking at different products.
Before upload, confirm the current Seller Central rules for the category, review the image on a phone, verify that the product is not cropped, and make sure the exported filename opens correctly. A local workflow—background preparation, resize, format conversion and compression—keeps unpublished product photography on your device until you choose to upload it to Amazon.
