Etsy Listing Image Size Guide for Sellers: Ratios, Cropping and Export Settings

An Etsy listing image is displayed in several different contexts: a search thumbnail, a shop grid, the listing page and an enlarged viewer. A photo that looks perfect in the full viewer can lose important details when Etsy crops it into a smaller card. The first image deserves the most attention because it becomes the shopper's first impression and establishes the crop used throughout discovery surfaces.

Etsy's recommendations can change as layouts evolve, so check the current Seller Handbook before a large catalog export. As a practical working target, use a high-resolution source with at least about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side when the original supports it. That gives the platform useful detail for zoom without forcing you to upload an enormous camera file.

Compose for the thumbnail safe area

Keep the product and its most important feature near the center of the frame. Avoid placing labels, small accessories or the edge of a handmade item against the outer border, where a thumbnail crop may remove them. Use the crop preview in your Etsy listing editor as the final authority, because shop themes and device widths can display images differently.

A consistent aspect ratio makes a shop grid feel deliberate. A landscape 4:3 composition works well for many products, while square images are easy to reuse across marketplaces and social channels. Choose one system for the primary images in a collection rather than alternating randomly between tall, wide and square frames.

Preserve texture while controlling file size

Handmade goods often depend on fine texture: paper grain, stitching, wood, metal or gemstone detail. Resize the photo to the dimensions you actually need before compressing it. Sending a 6,000-pixel camera original only gives the marketplace more work to do and may result in harsher automatic processing.

JPG is the practical default for normal product photography. Start with a high-quality export and inspect texture, text and edges before reducing quality further. PNG is better for graphics or transparent design elements but is rarely efficient for a full-color product photo. If your phone captured HEIC, convert it to JPG for predictable marketplace compatibility.

Prepare a complete listing set

Use the first image to identify the product instantly. Use later images for scale, alternate angles, packaging, variations and real-world context. Keep white balance and brightness consistent so color-sensitive buyers receive a realistic impression. Do not rely on compression to fix a dark or poorly focused photograph.

Before publishing, preview the listing on desktop and mobile, verify the thumbnail crop, and open every exported file. A repeatable sequence—select, crop, resize, convert and compress—makes it easier to update dozens of listings without accidentally mixing dimensions or quality settings.
